Botox
Our
facial expressions are critical in communicating emotions which
range from happiness, anger, and sadness. With repeated expressions
such as frowning, facial creases may become prominent, resulting
in an angry or tired appearance. Fortunately there is a medication,
Botox, which can be given to relax the muscles and diminish the
facial creases. This can soften and relax the facial area resulting
in a more rested appearance.
Common
Questions
What
is Botox and how does it work?
Botox
is the trade name for botulism toxin A, which is the toxin present
in food poisoning. Botox blocks impulses from the nerve to the facial
muscles, thereby relaxing the muscle, resulting in lessening of
the facial wrinkle. The areas which respond well to treatment are
the forehead frown lines and eyelid crows feet.
How
long does the effect last?
The
effect of Botox generally lasts 3 to 6 months. Repeat injections
can be scheduled as needed. The muscle function will eventually
return to normal.
Are
injections safe?
Yes.
Botox has been used extensively since 1986 where it was first used
by ophthalmologists and neurologists for eye muscle problems and
facial spasms. There is no risk of contracting food poisoning or
developing other problems from the treatment. Slight swelling, redness,
and bruising may occur at the injection site for several days. The
risk of other side effects depends upon the area treated. Treatments
in the area of frown lines and crows feet carry small risk of drooping
of the eyelid or double vision.
Can
Botox be used with other procedures?
Botox
can be used alone or in combination with other procedures such as
collagen injections or browlifts.
How
soon can I expect to see results?
Botox
takes about three to five days before the muscle is weakened. Repeated
treatments spaced three to six months apart can continually relax
the muscle and diminish the wrinkle.
Are
treatments painful?
The
injections are performed with a small needle, so you will feel a
tiny prick. There is no significant discomfort from the medication.
